TikTok Allegedly Leads Child Accounts to Pornographic Content In Just a Few Taps
Per findings from a new study, TikTok has been discovered to direct profiles of minors to pornographic content after only a few taps.
Research Methodology
An advocacy group created fake accounts using a date of birth for a minor and activated the "restricted mode" setting, which is designed to limit exposure to adult-oriented content.
Researchers found that TikTok proposed sexualized and explicit search terms to seven test accounts that were set up on unused smartphones with no prior browsing data.
Troubling Search Prompts
Search phrases recommended under the "suggested searches" feature contained "provocative attire" and "very rude babes" – and then advanced to keywords such as "hardcore pawn [sic] clips".
For three of the accounts, the sexualized searches were recommended right away.
Fast Track to Adult Material
Following just a few taps, the study team encountered explicit material from exposure to explicit intercourse.
Global Witness claimed that the content sought to avoid detection, usually by presenting the video within an benign visual or video.
In one instance, the procedure took two interactions after accessing the app: one tap on the search function and then another on the suggested search.
Regulatory Context
Global Witness, whose scope includes investigating digital platforms' effect on human rights, stated it carried out several experimental rounds.
One set occurred before the enforcement of minor safety measures under the UK's Online Safety Act on 25 July, and another subsequent to the rules took effect.
Alarming Results
Researchers added that several pieces of content included someone who seemed to be under 16 years old and had been reported to the online safety group, which oversees exploitative content.
The research organization alleged that the social media app was in non-compliance of the UK safety legislation, which mandates tech companies to stop children from viewing dangerous material such as explicit content.
Government Position
An official representative for Britain's media watchdog, which is responsible for monitoring the law, commented: "We acknowledge the effort behind this investigation and will review its results."
Official requirements for following the legislation indicate that digital platforms that pose a significant danger of presenting inappropriate videos must "modify their programming" to block harmful content from children's feeds.
The platform's rules prohibit explicit material.
Platform Response
The video platform announced that following notification from the organization, it had removed the offending videos and introduced modifications to its recommendation system.
"Immediately after notification" of these claims, we responded quickly to examine the issue, take down videos that violated our policies, and introduce upgrades to our search suggestion feature," stated a spokesperson.
