The Mystery Within the Briefcase Henry Unlocks in the Hit Series?
During the bulk of the concluding season of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max find themselves trapped in a realm of memories built from the past of Vecna. The search for freedom in "Escape from Camazotz" has them relive a defining event from Henry's youth—a moment that potentially carries the secret to his downfall permanently.

The Discovery in the Cavern
When she finds Max in the psychic realm known as Camazotz, it becomes clear she is taking refuge in a grotto that Henry strangely fears. A clever observation a spyglass pilfered from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the danger lies beyond the cave. By aligning her view through the cap, she and Max suddenly fall into a subterranean passage.
They watch a young, eight-year-old Henry find an wounded, fearful individual. As the boy offers aid, the man panics and shoots, striking Henry in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly asks tearfully. Essentially, yes, but the event involved more than a fight for life.
Similar to other plot points in volume 2, the full story behind the mine shaft incident is detailed in the theatrical production Stranger Things: The First Shadow.
A Naval Mystery and Stolen Research
This backstory explains the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which reportedly teleported a vessel into a dimension later called the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the sole survivor was the ship's commander, who came back in a vegetative state with an different blood composition.
The captain's son, the future Dr. Brenner, sought to replicate this experiment in Nevada. However, a treacherous employee took experimental components to sell to the Russian agents, who were desperate to launch their own interdimensional projects. This spy in the cavern is that employee.
The Briefcase's Contents
Given what is known about his research, the briefcase most likely held vials of the unique blood type. At that moment, Henry is bleeding from his hand. He likely becomes contaminated upon opening the case, leading to the origin of his telekinetic gifts—powers he would inadvertently transfer to the kids under Brenner's care.
Another possibility, the box could have held strange particles that eventually found its way to the Hawkins lab, where it acts to anchor the Upside Down. The prequel shows that Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, coming back hours later fundamentally changed. Throughout the play, he fights the whispers of a dark entity, similar to how Will Byers was influenced by the Mind Flayer in the past.
Confronting Terror
His lasting fear of that cave shows how profoundly traumatic the event was for him. Even as he orchestrates the army of monsters and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy remains. The villain weaponizes terror, and the series is building toward a showdown between the monster and Will, who has deliberately faced his own deepest fears to become stronger.
His confrontation has effectively disarmed Vecna. Furthermore, Will now is aware of what Vecna himself fears, and this may grant a critical advantage in the series finale that awaits.
