McLaren Attributes Crash to Rival Drivers for Norris-Piastri Incident
One tire flies off the McLaren of Lando Norris after he collided with team-mate Oscar Piastri at the start of the United States Grand Prix sprint race.
McLaren F1 team bosses Brown and Andrea Stella pointed to opposing racers for the crash between Piastri and Norris at the beginning of the United States Grand Prix sprint race.
The Australian driver, ahead of Norris in the championship by twenty-two points, made contact with his fellow McLaren driver after hitting the Hulkenberg.
The incident forced out both McLaren drivers out of the race, along with the Alonso, who was on the inner side of the Sauber driver.
Team Executives Voice Frustration Over Crash
Zak Brown, the team's chief executive officer, commented to broadcasters that some of the racing at the start was "amateur hour", adding: "Clearly Hulkenberg drove into Oscar and he had no reason being where he was."
The team boss Stella stated: "Our feeling is that we are displeased that we didn't have the chance to compete."
"It is unexpected that some racers with a lot of experience fail to act with appropriate caution. Go to the first corner, make sure you avoid harming competitors and carry on."
The team clarified that the team principal was mentioning both the Sauber driver and the Aston Martin driver.
Differing Perspectives on the Incident
Nevertheless, 1996 world champion Hill, providing analysis for BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra, said he thought Piastri had not demonstrated enough understanding of the dangers of the opening turn of an Formula 1 event when he chose to move inside to try to pass his teammate.
Piastri had a stronger launch than the Briton and initially competed on the outer side on the uphill approach to the turn.
However he then moved inside in an effort to get a advantage on Norris on the way out, only to hit the Sauber driver.
Racer Comments After the Collision
Piastri said: "Less than perfect but I did not see what occurred, I tried to move inside on Lando and we were both very far from the corner apex and then were struck and it propelled me into Lando. Unfortunate."
His teammate commented: "I just was struck, right? I did nothing wrong. Further back events unfolded and I just got unlucky and was struck because of it. I am unsure. I need to look a bit more carefully. It's more drivers further back just being a bit reckless and we are the consequence of that."
Alonso said: "At one point I thought I was in the correct position on the inside, but some vehicles came very quickly from the outer side switching back and then I was there in the center."
Hulkenberg, who had earned a season-best fourth, said: "Major disappointment. All the good work from yesterday in the trash. Just chaotic."
"Oscar turned in pretty forcefully trying to get the inside line and exit of Turn One but I can't just disappear."
"I had Fernando challenge on the inner side and I couldn't see him any more. I aimed to provide room for him and then Oscar turned in and the contact was inevitable."
Post-Crash and Team Response
McLaren will analyze the incident with their drivers but not until the race weekend. Both vehicles needed extensive work before grand prix qualifying at 22:00 BST on Saturday.
The team principal said: "Overall disappointed but we take it on the chin, we are now concentrating on repairing the cars, there is a lot to do and then we will restart the event from there."
"We are in a strong position from our competitiveness point of view so I trust we have the possibility to compete, compete fairly and utilize our performance."
"Championship points are the most important thing, I don't want to talk about mal-intent, just caution. A little more prudence would be beneficial for all involved."
Standings Impact
The race was taken by Red Bull's Verstappen, who gained ground on both McLaren drivers in the championship - he is now 55 points behind the Australian and thirty-three adrift of the Briton.
Stella said: "The implication is what the numbers show - we missed out on eight points with both racers, but we concentrate on ourselves. We have a highly capable car and two strong racers. We anticipate just some standard competition."
The Red Bull driver said he was approaching the title race one event at a time.
