Foolishness and Royal Self-Entitlement Sunk Andrew, and It Could Continue Yet

The saga started with a isolated photograph, arguably the most impactful ever snapped of a individual from the royal household.

In the frame appeared the Earl of Inverness, with his arm around a teenage girl, while another individual beamed suggestively in the rear.

Lacking that image, shot at a gathering in 2001, it would have been difficult to accept the claims of a young woman who declared she was trafficked across the sea and compelled to have brief relations with a member of the monarchy?

A curious, indicative move by someone who had overtly stated to have no heard of her, asserted he could not have had sex with her, and yet paid millions of his mother's resources to avert a protracted lawsuit.

Years of Disgrace

Against this backdrop, conversations of the royal family acting firmly to sever ties with Andrew are misguided. This scandal has continued for the majority of 15 years since that picture, and another photo of Andrew strolling amiably with a disgraced financier surfaced.

  • Hubris: For what duration did his siblings, maybe even his relatives, understand that Andrew was so arrogant?
  • Dubious Friendships: They must have realized, if his staff and the law enforcement were doing their jobs, that he had some highly questionable companions given he unabashedly invited them to palaces.
  • Monetary Excess: If the household did not know about his personal conduct, they certainly knew about his overspending with state resources.

Trips were listed in royal annual reports: private aircraft travel from the palace to a golf course and back again in time for lunch, chartered planes instead of regular transport, all for the convenience of "the frequent flyer".

World of Deference

Then there was the presumption which demanded deference when he appeared in a space or the supreme consciousness about his honorifics used on his letterheads in messages to his personal acquaintances.

He avoided accountability while his matriarch, who unaccountably pampered him, was still surviving. The Queen did at least revoke him of public duties and military positions in the aftermath of his ill-fated and, we now know, deceptive television interview six years ago.

Latest Events

It was only in the last 14 days that events sped up, following the issuance of books giving more troubling particulars of his conduct and that of his associates.

More information have again highlighted Andrew's belief that he could escape lying about his interaction with a convicted criminal.

Society (and the journalists) were far ahead of the monarchy. There was nobody of any consequence to speak up for him, a outcome of all those years of arrogance.

Royal Worries

The wiser family members realized that. The key objective is to hand down the crown, if not as heretofore at least whole and untarnished.

For generations the last 190 years trying to overcome the legacy of past sovereigns, showing they are valuable, dutiful and responsive to their people.

Andrew was putting all that in danger in an time when deference and discretion is no longer enough.

The Fallout

Ultimately, the well-known indecisive sovereign was pushed more. There was no alternative. The palace had surrendered command of the story.

Currently the stripping of honorifics and the persistent and permanent social disgrace that will pain Andrew most severely.

  • Reduction: Demoted to just a commoner
  • Prior Instance: The initial royal to lose his honorifics in recent history
  • Naval Career: Especially stinging given his duty in the conflict

He is still a counsellor of state, theoretically able to stand in for the king, and he is still in the lineage to the monarchy, but neither of these will actually happen.

What Lies Ahead

Can persons he encounters still acknowledge him? Might they still make mistakes and call him Sir? Will they even say Mr,

Naturally, he is not retiring to suburbia, but to the sovereign's vast property at a royal residence.

In that place, he will be provided by the monarch with one of the royal residences and given some form of financial support.

This differs from his previous residence, where he paid a token lease for more than 20 years, and the area is a bit remote, but even so it may not be adequate distance.

Pending Matters

Matters remain unresolved. There are still records in the possession of overseas authorities to be revealed.

  • Governmental Scrutiny: Will parliament request additional information
  • Financial Investigation: Or scrutinize the misuse of taxpayer funds
  • Criminal Investigation: There may even be a law enforcement inquiry into his actions

Maybe for the present the institutional damage to the institution is contained. The narrative from the institution was evidently that the removal of honorifics was what the monarch, and notably other senior family members, sought.

Changed Stance

An end to deception that Andrew was acting willingly. And, significantly, the brief statement showed clearly that the royals were siding with the complainant's narrative of incidents.

Even more, for the initial instance they finally showed consideration for the affected individuals: "The measures are considered essential, despite the truth that he maintains his innocence of the claims against him."

In the end it is entitlement, self-interest and indolence that will undermine the crown. In his foolishness, self-gratification and venality, Andrew gives the impression never to have grasped that lesson.
