“It was unfortunate. That was kind of an exchange with our fans out in front of us,” Jones stated during a radio appearance. “Present was a large group of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, our fans. The whole venue was brimming with enthusiasm for the Cowboys.”
Jones additionally clarified that the signal was entirely unintentional, happening amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I just showed the incorrect digit,” he noted. “It was accidentally performed. This is sincere. Should you call it unplanned, you can. However, it got resolved pretty quick.”
Historical Precedent for Proprietor Penalties
This is not the initial instance an NFL owner has been fined for misconduct. Previous cases include:
- Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at fans in January 2024.
- Then Titans proprietor Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable offensive signal.
