Champions League Fixtures Tonight: Manchester City v Bayer Leverkusen & More

Greetings to another evening of thrilling European Cup soccer. 9 games are planned for tonight, including 3 English clubs in play. Chelsea meet Barcelona in the key fixture of the night, while Newcastle travel to the French side and City host Leverkusen.

League Table

We're at the halfway point of the group stage, meaning the table is taking form. All six English clubs are presently in the upper twelve, but there are only 2 points between fifth and sixteenth position, thus there's a whiff of snakes and ladders about the entire situation. All remains open.

Historical Context

The only previous meeting between Newcastle and Marseille was the Europa League semifinal of 2003-04, claimed by an emerging star from Ivory Coast. Bayer Leverkusen and Manchester City have never met before. Barcelona and Chelsea have a peedie bit of history.

Early Match Updates

Only a single goal in the first half of the two early games. Samuel Dahl's 6th-minute strike has given Jose Mourinho’s Benfica a 1-0 advantage at Ajax.

Marseille v Newcastle Preview

Even though Newcastle traveled to the French south fresh from their restorative two-one home English top-flight win against Manchester City on Saturday, and having defeated Union SG, Benfica and Athletic Bilbao in the Champions League, their sole away win since the start of April came in Brussels at Union Saint-Gilloise.

It's not that Howe was overly keen to discuss the mental side of this away form issue. “The European Cup is distinct from Premier League games,” said the manager, whose team are sixth in the European table, with nine points from a possible twelve and direct qualification to the knockout phase nearly secured. “I don’t know if you can draw parallels between them.”

We have a separate live blog for Barcelona vs Chelsea. Scott Murray, the minute-by-minute version of Maradona is on duty for that.
