Bluefin Tuna Commands Historic Bid of 3.2 million dollars at Tokyo Auction
A substantial bluefin tuna made headlines at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, achieving a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the market's first auction of the new year.
The successful offer for the 243kg fish was placed by the company of a popular sushi restaurant group, which manages locations throughout Japan and internationally.
"An inaugural tuna heralds a prosperous start," remarked the entrepreneur, a regular figure at the traditional January sale.
Known as the Tuna Tycoon, this businessman is noted for submitting substantial bids for premium bluefin tuna at these high-profile January auctions.
Auction Surprise and Historic Past
After the auction, the winner informed reporters that he was "surprised at the winning bid," stating, "I had thought we would be able to buy it a little for less, but the price soared in no time."
This most recent acquisition surpasses his own notable purchases:
- He bid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
- He bid 155 million yen in 2013.
- In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1m).
Despite previously saying that he thought he "did too much," he has now managed to shatter his personal record another time.
A Tradition of High Prices
The inaugural auction at the Tokyo fish market is traditionally characterized by sky-high prices. Last year, the initial tuna was bought for 207 million yen by a different culinary group, which announced the fish would be served at its eateries across Japan.
The high-energy energy at the fish market during these pre-dawn auctions has evolved into a popular spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which commenced around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.
Immediate Consumption
The record-priced tuna was quickly processed for customers at the winner's sushi establishments soon after the auction was finished.
"I believe like I've commenced the year in a auspicious way after eating something so fortune-bringing as the year gets underway," shared one satisfied customer.
