Astronaut Reveals Emotional Distress In the Wake of Deluge of Backlash Following Journey

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her battle with depression after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a historic all-female space mission.

Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in April, which also included high-profile passengers.

The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who questioned its cost and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, referring to a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the days following the landing.

She described the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Buried Under Misogyny

Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to women's health research and conducted tests during the flight, said everything she had worked for – including her studies and years of training to the personal milestone of her heritage – was buried under the avalanche of gendered attacks.

She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of survivors of assault.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after an attack during her university years, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Now, eight months after achieving her goal, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the well-wishers whose kindness helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.

She concluded that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had resulted from the mission, such as spotlight on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

The fully automated spacecraft departed its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.
